45-minute painting exercise

By Meg Sodano

I came across a great art blog the other day (Sixty-Minute Artist) and have been reading the artist’s archives, which not only show his paintings, but include do-it-yourself projects and tips (ex. stretching canvases) and excellent painting exercises. I highly recommend reading the Sixty-Minute Artist. It’s very well written and interesting. I love his landscapes of the Southwest. One of his exercises is designed to get you to paint more loosely, and I need that, so I gave it a try. Here is his exercise. And below is my result. Well, it’s a start. I think I’ll be doing more of these.

Orange and cookie jar

This is acrylic on 6×6 canvas. I haven’t worked in acrylic for a while, and I realized I need some new brushes. Since my watercolor class, I have become used to using bigger brushes; today when I opened the drawer, I was like, Hey, why do I have all these tiny brushes? They’re worthless! You can’t paint loosely with brushes made for detailing….duh!

You are correct. The sixty minute artist is a great blog.
and don’t be so hard on yourself. I like the painting. It’s violet which symbolizes healing. If you haven’t sold it or given it away, you should keep that painting and hang it on your wall. It has got your spirit entwined in it.
